An urgent call is usually one of three things: water escaping under pressure, a drain that has stopped and is backing up, or a failed appliance that is flooding or has left the house without heat or hot water. The first steps are the same each time. Control the water, limit damage, then diagnose.

What counts as urgent

Urgent means damage is growing or the house is unsafe to use. Typical cases are listed below. Smaller problems, such as a slow drip, can usually be booked into a regular appointment.

  • A burst or split pipe, or a fitting spraying water
  • Sewage or wastewater coming up through a floor drain or fixture
  • A water heater tank leaking steadily
  • A sump pit overflowing during heavy rain or thaw
  • No water at all to the house

Before we arrive

Know where your main shut-off valve is. It is normally where the supply enters the house, often in a basement or utility room. Turning the valve clockwise stops the flow to every fixture.

For a leaking heater, shut off its cold-water inlet and the power or gas supply to it. Move valuables off the floor and open a drain or use towels to limit spread.

What we do on the job

We stop the water, find the failed part and explain what repair is needed to make the system safe. Where a full fix needs parts or more time, we describe the temporary measure and the permanent one separately.

Price depends on the work, and you get it upfront, before work starts, even outside normal hours.

Why prevention matters

Many urgent calls trace back to something that showed early signs: an ageing supply connector, a slow main drain or a pump that cycled oddly. Our drain, leak, sump and water heater pages explain those signs.

Questions we get asked

A pipe burst. What do I do first?

Close the main shut-off valve, turn it clockwise until it stops, then open a tap at the lowest level to drain the line. Switch off power to any wet area if water is near outlets or the panel. Photograph the damage for insurance, then call us.

Sewage is coming up from my basement floor drain. Is that an emergency?

Yes, treat it as one. Wastewater carries bacteria, so keep people and pets out, and stop using water in the house, including toilets, laundry and dishwasher. The blockage is in the main drain or beyond it, and it needs to be located and cleared promptly.

How do I shut off a leaking water heater?

Turn off the power at the breaker, or set a gas unit to pilot or off. Then close the cold-water inlet valve on top of the tank. If water is pouring out, close the main valve instead. Leave the drain valve alone until the tank has cooled.

Will I pay more for a call outside normal hours?

Prices depend on the job, and we give the price upfront before work starts, whatever time you call. Hearing the figure first means there are no surprises once the repair is done. If you want to compare options, we explain them.

Can you fix everything in a single visit?

Often the part can be repaired or replaced on the spot. If a specific fitting or fixture has to be sourced, we make the situation safe first and explain the temporary and the permanent fix separately, so you know what is holding and what is left to do.

What is the sound of water running when nothing is on?

It suggests a leak in a supply line, a toilet valve that will not seat, or a heater relief valve discharging. Shut off the main and listen again. If the noise stops, the leak is on the house side, and it should be traced soon.

My sump pit is full and the pump is not running. What now?

Check that the pump is plugged into a live outlet and the float can rise freely. If it still does not start, lift the float by hand to test it. Keep valuables off the basement floor, and call us if the pump or switch has failed.
